Basel

My year in Scotland is officially up, and I’ll be heading back home after a stop in Switzerland. Last week, Marvin and I met up with my parents in Basel for a few days before venturing to the mountains. Basel is full of amazing museums and we tried to get a few in during our time there. Our first stop was to the Kunstmuseum for their Cubist Cosmos exhibition featuring works by Picasso and Georges Braque. The exhibition was really well done and describes the beginning of Cubism in the early 20th century. We got to the museum by crossing the Rhine on a boat attached to a rope that floats using the momentum of the river’s current to get to the other side. It was such a gorgeous day at 36ºC, going into the air conditioned museum was a much needed escape! To end our first day in Basel, we joined my Dad’s work team at the Markthalle for dinner. This was one of my highlights of the day! The building is filled with food stalls featuring different types of food and drinks. We ended up going off to get a bunch of plates and then sharing them at our table like a big picnic.

One of the weirdest/coolest things in Basel is watching people float down the Rhine. They use these waterproof bags that keep your clothes dry and double as a floating support if you close them with enough air inside. On our second day, Marvin and my mom and I decided to join the crowd. We floated down the river twice to cool down before heading to meet up with Alec and Kelsey who arrived earlier that same day. We ended up going for dinner that night at the cutest restaurant with a garden terrace and some amazing schnitzel.

On our final day in Basel we went to the Tinguely Museum. This was such a cool museum unlike anything I’ve seen before. Most of the sculptures there came to life at the touch of a button and were all so creepy! We had a drink at the museum cafe before heading back into the heat and finding an outdoor patio with pizza and beer. After our lunch we walked for a while by the river looking for a boat tour. We eventually found it only to find that it closed half an hour before we got there! We went back to the hotel before heading out again for dinner at Bar Rouge for hotdogs and the best cocktails in town. This bar is on the top floor of the highest building in Basel and offers a great view of the city, a perfect way to finish our time there!
