It’s almost been a year since I left Scotland, and there are still so many pictures and stories I haven’t shared on the blog. In May of 2019, Zara and I were trying to explore as much of the Highlands as we could before we both went home in the summer. This one weekend, we decided to walk up Fyrish Hill, near Alness. We’d seen the Fyrish monument in pictures and wanted to see if we could find it ourselves.
It turned out that the hike was the easy part, finding the exit off the road was where we had the most trouble. We had to pull over numerous times, finding ourselves on backroads and in the middle of private estates in the countryside. We eventually called Marvin’s mum for directions and finally found our way to the bottom of the hill. Thankfully Zara’s little car didn’t give out climbing the hills before we got there!
It took us just under an hour to get to the top of the hill. It rained for a bit of the walk (what else can you expect in Scotland really?), but we had a lot of fun hiking up in our rain coats. The monument was really cool, like something out of a movie. There was one other group at the top with a little dog that looked suspiciously like Greyfriars Bobby, very Scottish.
We walked around a bit before heading back down the hill. The views of the firth below were also stunning, despite a bit of fog.
