Moving

Ten days in and already the craziest adventure! Brooke and I left Edmonton for Inverness on the 13th of August and fell into the worst luck before our plane even left the ground. Our flight out of Edmonton was cancelled so we were rerouted to Vancouver on a flight two hours later. That meant that we ended up missing our connecting flight from London to Inverness, and because we were flying on a different airline from there we were not given a new flight.

By the time we reached London there were no more flights going out that day so we decided to take the 8hr train ride from Kings Cross. We made our way through the city with a year’s worth of luggage and caught our train just in time. We hopped off in Edinburgh and transferred to the next train heading to Inverness. We finally felt like we were in the clear when it was announced over the intercom that the train could not continue as the line was blocked due to an “incident” further down the track.

The train company arranged for coach buses to take the remaining passengers around the incident and to the next station about an hour away. We waited two hours for the buses to arrive and then had another hour on the train once we arrived at the other side.

At 3 a.m. on Wednesday morning we finally made it to Inverness. I had the most amazing sleep after all of that and woke up 9 hrs later to Brooke informing me that the apartment we were supposed to move into that Friday had been let to someone else at the last minute. To top it all off, both of us found out later on that our paperwork hadn’t come through on time so we haven’t been able to work all week, and won’t start making any money until we do!

Having said that, I’ve still had an incredibly fun week. Our first night here we met the nicest couple from Manitoba who are working with the same agency as we are. They offered us their spare room to live in while we sorted out our own arrangements and we’ve had the best time with them. We’ve finally found a new flat to rent with the coolest landlord (who invited us on a bike tour booked for tomorrow) and the location of this place can’t be beat. My paperwork finally came in so I can start work on Monday, and Brooke’s will be ready in a few more days.

The people we’ve met on our journey over have made every minute worth it, and I can’t wait to see what other stories we have to tell this time next year. If you’ve made it this far into my rant then thank you, I’m sure there will be another in the future. πŸ™‚
